Reduce energy consumption by up to 70%
Fume cupboards are essential for safe laboratory and production environments where users can be exposed to harmful fumes, dust and gases. By pulling from the atmosphere through a sash, the fume cupboard directs the harmful air for expelling. Where Constant Air Volume (CAV) systems are used within the fume cupboard, air will be expelled at a constant rate, whether the sash is open or not, placing a high burden on the HVAC system, as opposed to more energy efficient Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems.
The good news is that VAV systems can be supplied as a new unit, or retrofitted to existing units, reducing energy consumption by up to 70% in some cases. By reducing the amount of air removed, when the fume cupboard is not in use, less stress is placed on the HVAC system.
The benefits of VAV fume cupboard ventilation are far-reaching, including the reduced risk of pushing contaminated air back into the environment, less disturbance of equipment and less disruption to experiments. VAV units also contribute to BREEAM conformance for new builds.
